When should I service my tractor?
When should I service my tractor?
This is a common question we get asked. Unfortunately, there isn’t a single answer that fits all makes and models of tractor or any other farm equipment for that matter. The Operator’s Manual is essential to know what the manufacturer engineered into that specific piece of equipment for optimal performance today and over its lifespan.
Familiarize yourself with the Operator’s Manual especially the maintenance chart. This chart will provide the manufacturer’s suggested service intervals to optimize the performance of the machine. It should be noted that recommendations may be listed with terms such as: check, replace, lubricate, drain fluid, cleaning, adjust, grease, test, change fluid or bleed.
- Routine maintenance begins with daily observation of the machine checking fluid levels, dirt accumulation in radiator/coolers, loose bolts/clamps/fittings, etc.
- Regular lubrication with grease per the OEM’s (Original Equipment Manufacturer) guidelines.
- Check air pressure in tires.
- Follow the service interval based on OEM guidelines. Note that using fluids and filters from sources other than OEM may shorten the service interval as they may not meet the OEM requirements. Service intervals have generally increased as oil lubrication and filtration performance have improved.
Following the OEM guidelines will assure the warranty will be intact should a problem occur during that time period but will also enhance the tractor’s performance.
This maintenance chart is found in owner’s manuals for their specific piece of equipment. A copy of a maintenance chart accompanies this article. It shows the recommended maintenance actions based on hours of use and provides a reference to a page number in the manual for specific guidance on that step. Following the manufacturer’s guidance on maintenance will ensure the warranty is intact and will aid in providing you with the maximum performance and longevity of the machine.
